Vehicle Idling Reduction at Treasure Valley Elementary Schools

We focus on vehicle idling in school loading zones. Using community based social marketing strategies to reduce private vehicle idling in school loading zones during drop-off and pick up hours, we developed and distributed educational and outreach materials (brochures, flyers, stickers, decals, and key chains) to elementary school parents. We coordinated with individual schools and attended parent teacher organization meetings to educate and inform parents about the health effects of vehicle emissions, and the importance of Clean Air Zones. Our goal was to create a social norm at these schools where parents and teachers commit to the Clean Air Zone, and to promote a healthy environment for everyone, especially the children. Idling data was collected before and after outreach was conducted to determine how effective our outreach methods were
