Literacy Learning Centers for Kindergarten - Literature Review

This project examines current research in literacy, early childhood environments, and developmentally appropriate methods of teaching reading. In order to maximize learning the skills of reading, children need a developmentally appropriate curriculum as well as an environment which allows for individual discovery. The project resulted in a manual for literacy centers that not only informs Kindergarten teachers about the latest literacy research, but it also shows ways to incorporate reading activities in the classroom. Some examples include: downloadable books, SMARTboard activities and computer-based reading programs as new forms of technologies which build upon visual stimulation in the kindergarten environment. Learning centers and their “hands-on” approach helps students to master meaningful concepts at developmentally appropriate levels. Centers provide a foundation of learning skills in a small group setting utilizing the major recommendations of current reading research. Teachers can assess students through consistent observation and interactions as they facilitate literacy center activities. Students will be learning the foundations of reading, in activities which are interesting, challenging and developmentally appropriate. This method of teaching literacy to young learners is introduced and may replace traditional kindergarten models of learning how to read
