Chemical sensors are used in many industries; from medical to homeland security. These industries demand sensors to be high sensitivity, low cost, and small size. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chemical sensor provides a promising solution to this problem. SPR is a phenomenon that causes extraordinary transmission in periodically textured metal membranes. These periodically modified metal membranes are called photonic crystals. The presence of a high refractive index chemical on the metal membrane will cause a spectral shift in the transmission peaks.
