[[abstract]]The relationship between X-ray reflection phase and N-beam diffraction as well as the phase-determination method utilizing N-beam interference effects are described. The experimental techniques of producing N-beam diffraction and the theoretical grounds, bath kinematical and dynamical, of the phase-determination method are presented and discussed. Experimental phase determination using N-beam diffraction for single crystals of small molecules and macromolecules is demonstrated.
