[[abstract]]THE PAINT on some newly-installed pylons on the Penhu Islands failed in an atmosphere that was both humid and heavily laden with sea salts. The failure was carefully analysed by measuring the adhesive strength of the coating; samples taken from the stripped paint films and from the underlying zinc layer were examined using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses.
