A MODIFIED POWDER ROUTE FOR THE PREPARATION OF SOL-GEL PROCESS-SYNTHESIZED MAGNESIA AND ALUMINA

[[abstract]]The alkoxide sol-gel process has been extensively applied to the preparation of homogeneous glasses and ceramics for the past decade. The advantages and disadvantages of the alkoxide sol-gel process have been extensively discussed. It is also to be expected that the gel-derived powder approach can complement the usual sol-gel process in terms of application in larger bulk specimens, by offering a similar purity and homogeneity, and permitting densification by fast sintering. However, it is not well recognized the advantage of gel powder processing would offer, since such material usually must be hot-pressed. If reliable structural ceramics are to be produced from sol-gel-derived powders, the appropriate powder route must be developed to ensure, with a high probability and reproducibility, that hard agglomerate or heterogeneity will be reduced or eliminated from the powders.
