[[abstract]]The anisotropy of fiber-reinforced plastics heavily influences the chip formation and machinability indices during machining. Fiber arrangement is hereby more dominant than the often stressed cutting conditions. Buckling and delamination failure govern the chip formation when cutting parallel to fiber axis while bending failure controls the chip formation in perpendicular cutting. Material removal at other fiber angles is composed of these three principal mechanisms. Beam theory, linear elastic fracture mechanics and composite mechanics are used to construct the correlation between cutting force and the produced chip length with consideration of the effects of chip separation.
