[[abstract]]Advanced composite materials offer significant advantages in strength and stiffness coupled with light weight relative to conventional metallic materials. Amongst all machining operations, drilling using twist drill is the most commonly applied method for generating holes for riveting and fastening structural assemblies. The research references of the drilling of fiber-reinforced plastics report that the quality of the cut surfaces is strongly dependent on drilling geometry. The size of the delamination zone has been shown to be related to the thrust force developed during the drill process and there is a critical thrust force below which no damage occurs.
