[[abstract]]The characteristics of the taper interfaces between the taper tool holder (ANSI No. 40) and the spindle were investigated. An identification algorithm was developed to identify the interface parameters from the measured frequency response functions (FRFs). Both the effects of the axial clamping force and the angle fitting error on the characteristics of the taper joint were investigated. The lower and upper bounds of the average stiffness of the taper joint with normal preload were found in this work. The results also show that the difference of the average stiffness between the joints with best fit and worst fit can be higher than 100%, even if the joint is manufactured according to the ISO 7388 standard.[[fileno]]202023101...
