[[abstract]]Injection of a relativistic electron beam into a fully ionized plasma in a strong magnetic field has been studied using a one-dimensional particle simulation model. Electron beams of finite pulse length and of pulsed injection are followed in time to study the effects of beam-plasma interactions on the beam propagation. It is found that the beam cannot propagate into a plasma with a density close to the beam density, because the beam energy cannot overcome the build-up potential. When the beam density is decreased, significant plasma electron energy increases due to acceleration by the injection field.
