International medical students focus on global health issues at Notre Dame

150 medical students from 88 countries recently descended on The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle to discuss global health issues they face as students and practitioners. The event is part of the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) conference held twice a year and hosted by different medical schools around the world. This first one for 2007 is hosted by Notre Dame and The University of Western Australia medical schools. The IFMSA is an international organisation comprised of future physicians who share a common interest in global health. It is an independent, non-governmental federation and is recognised by the United Nations and World Health Organisation as the international forum for medical students. While here the students have participated in many workshops and presentations, such as - malaria, tobacco and chronic diseases workshops and international education and peer training. They have also had the opportunity to develop stronger relationships with other delegates. Medical student Damien Turner said the international students have really enjoyed their stay in Fremantle and at the University. “Many of the delegates see each other only at these conferences so there are a lot of hugs, smiles and laughs. The social program has been great with everyone getting right in there. “Notre Dame has been a fantastic venue for the conference and Fremantle itself has won the hearts of the students. Many have said coming back here is something they see themselves doing in the future,” said Mr Turner
