New appointments advance research at Notre Dame’s School of Medicine

The General Practice and Primary Health Care Research unit at The University of Notre Dame Australia’s, Fremantle School of Medicine has received a boost recently following the appointments of Professor Max Bulsara to the Chair of Biostatistics and the promotion of the unit’s director, Associate Professor Tom Brett, to professorial level. Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Gavin Frost, congratulated the new professors on their appointments which he said were a significant commitment by the University to its research focus. “I’m delighted that Notre Dame has acquired the services of a very distinguished biostatistician such as Professor Bulsara. I’m sure his research experience will help with the development of a new cadre of medical and health sciences researchers and bring together research capacity among the various schools of the University and further afield. “He has a very impressive research track record with numerous National Health and Medical Research Council grants to his name.” In his new role, Professor Bulsara will work with both the School of Medicine and the University’s Institute for Health and Rehabilitation Research. He will also provide support with research design for other schools on the University’s campuses. Professor Frost said that Professor Brett’s promotion was also a significant development for the School. “The General Practice and Primary Health Care Research unit has taken the lead in developing research capacity at the School of Medicine. The involvement of general practitioners, medical students and practice nurses in a hands-on approach to primary care research is an exciting development that bodes well for the future research output from Professor Brett’s unit.” Since the School opened in February 2005, Professor Brett has been instrumental in developing a successful research team.
