Excellence in research and training of Notre Dame’s Health Science students recognised

The School of Health Sciences at The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Fremantle Campus has been officially recognised by the City of Fremantle for excellence in the areas of research and training of its Health Science students. Each year, on the International Day of People with Disabilities, the City recognises organisations and individuals who provide employment, access to services and community activities and practical support for people with disabilities. For the first time, the Fremantle Disability Access Consulting Committee with the City of Fremantle chose to recognise the efforts of Notre Dame through a Special Commendation to its School of Health Sciences. The School received the award at the Fremantle Friendly Access and Inclusion Awards ceremony held in December 2009. Dean of the School, Professor Helen Parker, accepted the award from Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettit. On receiving the award she said that it was very pleasing to be recognised especially among the other worthy awardees. “I feel that besides the excellent academic curriculum and practicum experiences, the University’s pervasive ethos of social justice and service makes for a potent mix in the students’ education. Hopefully we can continue turn out health graduates with a heightened awareness of the needs of those with disabilities and with an understanding of the diversity in our community. “The Health Sciences Practicum Office staff are currently in discussion with Disability Access personnel to develop opportunities for students to participate in community linkage programs for young people with disabilities, such as school to work transition, and recreation access programs. “The Physiotherapy course also offers students during the early years of the course opportunities to provide home and respite support with high needs individuals in its Pre-Clinical Education program,” explained Professor Parker.
