Physiological activity of organic acids isolated form catchweed

[Author abstract]Substances isolated from catchweed plants that inhibited plant growth were found to be succinic acid and sodium lactate. The concentration of succinic acid that accumulated in the stems and leaves of catchweed reached 723μg/g of plant. This compound inhibited the growth of the seedings of white clover, broad-leaved dock, and large crabgrass at concentrations of from 250 to 750 ppm, depending on the species, but the growth of catchweed was unaffected. Sodium lactate also strongly inhibited the growth of these seedings at 200 ppm; it markedly promoted elongation of the same seedings at concentrations of 600-800 ppm. Both organic acids may inhibit growth by the reaction of the carboxyl group with a nucleophilic group such as an SH-group. The total amount of both acids present in the plant tissues may give rise to allelopathy in susceptible plants.[著者抄録]ヤエムグラ植物体の抽出物より生長抑制を示す2種類の成分を単離した。すなわち活性物質として活性炭カラムクロマトグラフィーの30%メタノール溶液による溶離画分よりコハク酸、水溶離画分より乳酸ナトリウムを同定した。両成分はレタス、メヒシバ、エゾノギジギシの幼苗に対して生長抑制を示したが、ヤエムグラに対しては著しい活性は認められなかった。乳酸ナトリウムは100～250ppmの濃度で根長、草丈、生体重について強い阻害活性を示すが、それ以上の処理濃度では逆に生長促進作用を示した。この傾向はササゲのポット試験でも同様で、生長促進の濃度範囲で根瘤形成を著しく促進させた。このことは乳酸ナトリウムが根瘤バクテリアの生育に好条件の土壌環境を維持する作用をもつものと考えられる。コハク酸はヤエムグラ組織中の茎葉部に多量に集積し、最高723μg/生体重gにもなる。これら有機酸の生長抑制作用は、酢酸、プロピオン酸、酪酸などと同様カルボキシル基に由来するものと考えられるが、この集積量は植物体から土壌中に分泌、脱離して他雑草の生長に影響を及ぼすいわゆる他感作用としての活性発現に十分な量であると考えられる
