The teacher's non-verbal behavior in the classroom

The efficiency of teaching depends, on a large rate, on the communication between the contributors of the educational procedure (teacher - pupil). Teacher and pupils communicate with each other verbally and non-verbally. The importance of the teachers non-verbal behavior, whose is thought of as the prime regulator of the educational relation, has been recognized and the pattern of such behavior has been a subject of several research works especially in foreign areas. In Greece, the number of the relevant research works is limited while the majority of them are related with the general issue of non-verbal communication between teacher and pupil. Our research aims to report the viewpoint of the trainee students Department of Primary Teacher Education who study in the University of Crete regarding the subject of the teachers non-verbal behavior, and, at the same time, to indicate the way in which these students behave nonverbally during their teaching sessions. Twenty students of the second and the fourth year of studies were observed, while α total of 31 of their practice lessons were videotaped, the lessons represented three fields: linguistics, physics and mathimatics and social studies. For the collection of the material of the research, questionnaire and observation were used, while for the statistical process, the statistical program SPSS was used. The results of this research indicated that there were no systematic informing (theory) related to the social skill of the non-verbal communication of the teacher, and mostly the absence of the practice of this social skill. As a result, the candidate teachers use their non-verbal behavior regardless of how it could be translated by their pupils and regardless of now it can contribute to the creation of the teaching atmosphere in class (teacher-pupil communication). The study of the frequencies and the correlations of the variables which took place with the implementation of the Χ² criterion, indicated that the majority of the hypothesis were valid. Indeed, the students performed specific though limited repertoire of patterns (poor non-verbal behavior). Their non-verbal behavior was related to the classroom, the lesson and the level of their school practice, while from their answers to the questionnaire, it appeared that they use the patterns of the non-verbal behavior without realizing their importance. For the vast majority of the students, verbal and non-verbal behavior have the same value, while in regard to other educational activities, they acknowledged the latter as less important. We believe that through this research, we will contribute to the sensitization of some of the agents of the education so that the teachers-to-be will be provided with the appropriate supplies in order to perform a complete and effective liturgy.Η αποτελεσματικότητα ή όχι της διδασκαλίας εξαρτάται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από την επικοινωνία των συντελεστών της εκπαιδευτικής πράξης (δασκάλου-μαθητών). Δάσκαλος και μαθητές επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους λεκτικά και μη λεκτικά. Η σημασία της μη λεκτικής συμπεριφοράς του δασκάλου, που θεωρείται ως ο κύριος ρυθμιστής της Μορφωτικής Σχέσης, έχει αναγνωριστεί και η μορφή αυτής της συμπεριφοράς έχει αποτελέσει αντικείμενο αρκετών ερευνών κυρίως στο ξενόγλωσσο χώρο. Στην Ελλάδα ο αριθμός των σχετικών ερευνών είναι περιορισμένος και οι περισσότερες απ αυτές ασχολούνται κυρίως με το γενικότερο θέμα της μη λεκτικής επικοινωνίας δασκάλου-μαθητών. Η έρευνά μας έχει σκοπό να παρουσιάσει από τη μία τις απόψεις των ασκούμενων φοιτητών του Π.Τ.Δ.Ε. Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης πάνω στο θέμα της μη λεκτικής συμπεριφοράς του δασκάλου στη σχολική αίθουσα, ενώ από την άλλη, να δείξει πώς οι ίδιοι συμπεριφέρονται μη λεκτικά κατά τις διδασκαλίες τους. Παρατηρήθηκαν έτσι είκοσι (20) φοιτητές στο 2° και 4° Επίπεδο Σχολικής Πρακτικής και μαγνητοσκοπήθηκαν συνολικά 31 διδασκαλίες τους, αντιπροσωπευτικές των τριών περιοχών μαθημάτων, δηλαδή Γλωσσικών, Φυσικο-Μαθηματικών και Κοινωνικών Σπουδών. Για τη συγκέντρωση του υλικού της έρευνας χρησιμοποιήθηκε το Ερωτηματολόγιο και η Παρατήρηση ενώ η στατιστική επεξεργασία έγινε με τη χρήση του στατιστικού προγράμματος SPSS στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης. Από την έρευνα προέκυψε ότι δεν υπάρχει ούτε συστηματική ενημέρωση (θεωρία) που να αφορά στην κοινωνική δεξιότητα της μη λεκτικής συμπεριφοράς του εκπαιδευτικού, ενώ πολύ περισσότερο απουσιάζει η άσκηση (πράξη) της παραπάνω κοινωνικής δεξιότητας. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα οι υποψήφιοι εκπαιδευτικοί να κάνουν χρήση της μη λεκτικής τους συμπεριφοράς χωρίς να τους απασχολεί πώς αυτή αποκωδικοποιείται από τους μαθητές τους και πώς συμβάλλει στη διαμόρφωση του παιδαγωγικού κλίματος μέσα στην τάξη (επικοινωνία δασκάλου-μαθητή). Η μελέτη των συχνοτήτων αλλά και οι συσχετίσεις των μεταβλητών που έγινε με την εφαρμογή του χ² κριτηρίου, έδειξαν πως οι υποθέσεις στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος τους επιβεβαιώθηκαν. Πράγματι, οι φοιτητές παρουσία---ζαν συγκεκριμένες μορφές μη λεκτικής συμπεριφοράς, είχαν δηλαδή ένα συγκεκριμένο αλλά αρκετά περιορισμένο ρεπερτόριο μορφών (φτωχή μη λεκτική συμπεριφορά). Η μη λεκτική συμπεριφορά τους εξαρτιόταν από την Τάξη, το Μάθημα και από το Επίπεδο Σχολικής Πρακτικής στο οποίο βρίσκονταν, ενώ και κυρίως από τις απαντήσεις τους στο ερωτηματολόγιο, φάνηκε πως χρησιμοποιούν τις μορφές της μη λεκτικής συμπεριφοράς χωρίς να συνειδητοποιούν τη σημασία τους. Για τους περισσότερους φοιτητές λεκτική και μη λεκτική συμπεριφορά έχουν την ίδια αξία, ενώ σε σχέση με άλλες διδακτικές ενέργειες, προσδίδουν στη δεύτερη λιγότερη σημασία. Πιστεύουμε ότι με την έρευνα αυτή θα συμβάλλουμε στην ευαισθητοποίηση κάποιων από τους φορείς της αγωγής των υποψηφίων δασκάλων, ώστε οι μελλοντικοί εκπαιδευτικοί να έχουν τα απαραίτητα εφόδια για να επιτελούν έργο ολοκληρωμένο και αποτελεσματικό
