En el contexto de construcción de un estado terrorista por parte de la última dictadura militar argentina, surgió el grupo de Madres de Plaza de Mayo. Intentando saber acerca del paradero de sus hijos desaparecidos se convirtieron en una de las fuerzas de oposición más dinámicas, instituyendo una experiencia política inconmensurable a cualquiera otra preexistente. En este texto se narra esta experiencia y se conjetura acerca de los motivos que las llevaron a enfrentarse con un régimen altamente represivo. Por último se valora la potencialidad del maternaje como atributo para el ejercicio de la política.
