The economic simulation of cotton gins in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and Tamaulipas, Mexico

GINMODEL, an economic-engineering model, was used to simulate the representative gins from both regions. The results of the study indicate that the costs per bale of cotton ginning in Tamaulipas are higher than 'in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The two Mexican gins studied had per bale costs of $59.52 and $53.41 per bale respectively. U.S. gm costs ranged from a low of $28.46 to a high of $36.84 per bale. The two major reasons for the higher costs in Mexico were due to lower volumes and 'Inefficient use of hourly labor
