Non-realistic digital rendering

Following the formulas of Renaissance perspective geometry, computer graphics rendering projects three-dimensional, synthetic objects onto a two-dimensional, gridded plane of pixels. The general intent of such rendering is photo-realism. Perspective geometry, however, is only one member of a much larger set of formulas for translating the world we see into images. In addition to rendering a perspectively correct computer graphics image, it is possible to apply additional formulas to the rendering process to filter and refine the visual information contained within the computer graphics image. Further, extracted information from the image under manipulation can be used to control the application of the specific formula to the image.
