Selection of an amalgam alloy usually depends on personal preference, based on factors such as handling, condensation, carving and current cost. With the introduction of high copper alloys, the claim was made that a reduced Gamma 2 concentration, or its absence, would have a beneficial effect on the long-term integrity of the alloy and, as a result, would improve the margins. Confirmation of the claim, however, can be based only on longitudinal studies. In our studies, an intraoral replica technique was utilized, allowing replication of restorations that had been in existence for periods up to eleven years.
