Developing and Implementing A Tool for Evaluating Nurses Performance in the Operating Theater

A methodological study was conducted at University Hospital in Menoufiya, Egypt to develop and implement an operating theater performance appraisal tool. The aims of the study were to: 1-Design a toll to evaluate the nurses performance of tasks and be- havior in the operating theater. 2- Test the validity and reliability of the Operating Theater Nurses Performance Appraisal Tool (OTNPAT). 3- Implement the Operating Theater Nurse's Perfor- mance Appraisal Tool in Menoufiya University Hospital, Menou- fiya, Egypt. The developed tool included 64 items, which identi- fied the tasks of the circulating and scrub roles of the operating theater nurse's performance. The tool was developed using current literature and the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORNINC.) standards, recommended practices & guidelines. After devel- opment,the tool was evaluated and validated by jury groups con- sisting of surgeons and nurse educators. The tool was implemented to assess the performance of operating theater nurses at Menoufiya University Hospital. The study found that the Operating Theater Nurse's Performance Appraisal Tool is valid and reliable. The tool is recommended for performance evaluation of operating theater nurses
