Chemoembolization is a well-recognized technique for intermediate to advanced cases of liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the 3rd most common cause of cancer mortality and is the 5th most common form of cancer worldwide. It has many causes such as AFB1 intoxication, alcohol abuse, cirrhosis and hepatitis A and B infections. The need to produce biodegradable microspheres stems from the complications that arise from embolization with non-degradable ones, such as non-target embolization. To this, promising new drugs (sunitinib and sorafenib) have been marketed that increase the life expectancy of patients by 8 to 10 months.
