The temperature dependence was studied of the spontaneous birefringence of the fully ferroelectric or ferroelastic phases of 21 boracite crystals with the formula M3B7O13X (M = Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, or Cd; X = Cl, Br, or I). First-order phase transitions were observed with 3 types of sequences. The crystallophysical and potential technology applications of spontaneous birefringence are discussed
