Introduction Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women in Ireland after non-melanoma skin cancer, with over 2,000 women diagnosed with the disease each year. It remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortalities in women, with an average annual rate of 644 deaths between 1994 and 2001. Although the mortality rate decreased between 1989 and 2006 by nearly 27%, it still remains one of the highest mortality rates in Europe.
