To implement preventive policies of disability in older diabetic people, the role of diabetes in the disablement process should be investigated. Diabetes mellitus is consistently associated with a higher prevalence of disability at all states, as well as with a progression in disability states and may be considered as a brake on recovery. This association is partially explained by existing complications, associated conditions (obesity, depression, arterial hypertension) treatment burden, and other social characteristics (lower income, lower educational level).
