"Delaware" was a package freighter built of steel in 1905 at Ecorse, Michigan for the Erie & Western Transportation Co. of Buffalo, New York. She ran out of Buffalo, New York to the upper lakes and in the early 1920s, was owned by Great Lakes Transit Corp. of Buffalo, New York. About the mid 1920s, this freighter was renamed "Fred W. Sargent" and remained with the Great Lakes Transit Corp. until 1943, at which time, several of their vessels were taken over by the government. In 1945, the "Fred W. Sargent," along with the "Utica," "George D. Dixon," and "Alfred Smith" were extensively remodeled at Manitowoc, Wisconsin following a sale to a Chilean Steamship Co.
