Built at the Mackay, Donald and Boston Navy Yard and commissioned there October 3, 1876, the "USS Essex" sailed the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans until 1889. She served as a training ship until 1903. From 1904-1926 the ship sailed the Great Lakes, serving the Ohio Naval Militia and the Ninth Naval District
