During the follicular development, the oocyte is in close contact with surrounding cumulus cells (CCs) to form a cumulus-oocyte complex. The bidirectional exchange between oocyte and contiguous CCs via gap junction communications and paracrine signaling is important for oocyte competence and CCs development. These reciprocal regulations are controlled by some key genes.
