Transposable elements (TEs) and their relics are major components of eukaryotic genomes. TEs are potentially highly mutagenic as their proliferation can cause chromosomal rearrangements, disrupt genes or affect gene expression through transcriptional interference. However, few TEs are usually mobile within genomes at any one time thanks to potent mechanisms that restrain their activity, such as DNA methylation in mammals and plants. Thus, in the flowering plant Arabidopsis, severe loss of DNA methylation caused by mutations in the chromatin remodeler gene DDM1 triggers massive accumulation of transcripts corresponding to TEs.
