During immune responses, B cells diversify their repertoire through somatic hypermutation (SHM) and class switch recombination (CSR). Both of these mechanisms are dependent on the activity of activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID), an enzyme that deaminates cytosines into uracils generating mismatches that are differentially processed to result in SHM and CSR.
