El desarrollo de zonas transpresivas normalmente está relacionado con límites de placas de convergencia oblicua. La deformación dentro de estas zonas presenta un alto grado de reparto cuando se localizan en la corteza superior. El Macizo del Torcal de Antequera (MTA) forma parte de una zona de cizalla con una orientación aproximada E-W localizada al final del Arco de Gibraltar Occidental (Cordillera Bética). El patrón de reparto de la deformación dentro del MTA se resuelve en dominios que desarrollan distintas estructuras discretas (pliegues y fallas normales, inversas y de salto en dirección).
