As linguistic theory becomes more refined, linguists increasingly rely on subtle judgments about slight acceptability differences among complex sentences as the sole evidence motivating interesting grammatical hypotheses. It thus becomes increasingly important to make informed decisions about the role of processing factors in determining acceptability judgments in order to correctly identify the source of acceptability differences and to make appropriate assumptions about the division of labor between a theory of competence and theories of performance. Three areas are discussed where the results of sentence processing studies may constrain the appropriate grammatical treatment of linguistic phenomena: d-linking, focus and morphosy...
