After the peace treaty between England and Spain was signed in 1604, the 'Spanish faction' at the English court had reasons to feel emboldened. King James I, immediately following the peace, attempted to make the agreement binding by negotiating a dynastic marriage with the Spanish Habsburgs initially for his son Henry, then, after Henry’s untimely death, for his son Charles. This contribution aims to assess the extent to which the position of the 'Spanish faction’ shifted during James I’s reign. The very lack of a dynastic union between England and Spain merely exacerbated the growing tensions between the English King and his political nation, leading to the decline of the ‘Spanish faction’ at the English court and to the outbreak...
