Our University: Summertime As we move past the shortest day of the year, my thoughts turn to the eventual return of languid summer days. This column about how universities could make better use of their facilities and faculty during the summer months first ran in April of 2010. Starting the New Year with the recognition that universities are changing, if only at the margins, is a worthwhile reflection. While many within the walls of the academy decry tradition the strength of it on university campuses is powerful testimony to how central it is. Everywhere, authority and tradition have to justify themselves in the face of questions. Gustav Heineman
