A new method for computing Maximum Softening Damage Index (MSDI) is proposed. The MSDI, a measure of global damage, is based on the relative reduction of the first eigenfrequency (or equivalently, the relative increase in the fundamental period) of a structure over the course of a damage event. The method proposed here makes use of wavelet transform coefficients of measured output response records to provide time-localized information on structural softening
