Greenwich Village in the early 1960s was a magnet for misfits, radicals and drifters from all over the US and the world at large. The cosmopolitan and multicultural environment of low-rent buildings, plenty of coffee shops and other cheap places of business held out an allure for young people everywhere who felt the attraction of an urban setting which yet managed to remain a haven from adult responsibilities and seemed to provide a homespun community and a possibility of one finding oneself among one's peers: a perfect village within a perfect city
