The paper gives an introduction to the philosophical foundation for design theories, mainly based on the work of the American philosopher, Del Ratzsch. Although the concept of design has a very long history in different, also scientific, settings, very little has been done in the area of formal analysis of the concept. The paper describes definition of concepts and classification of design activity. A short explanation is given of the different approach of Dembski and Ratzsch towards design theory
