International audienceWhen they arrive at university, French students still seem unfamiliar with a historical analysis of cartographic production. Although this approach is rarely used in secondary education, it seems essential for understanding how the world was 'mapped'. Using examples of French cartography at the time of the conquest of America, and based on a comparative analysis of different representations, the text looks back at an experience of analysing maps that are the subject of different forms of dissemination currently available (portals, exhibitions, popular science texts and videos). A reminder of the power issues associated with cartography by putting its message into context is intended to provide a more critical approach ...
