What is a Greek city? Among the many answers given by the ancients and moderns, I have chosen to follow the path traced by Alcaeus and Thucydides: ‘men make the city’ (andres gar polis). Thinking about the Greek city through society also implies adopting a few sociological concepts. In this paper, the notions of Stand (Weber) and habitus (Bourdieu), the concept of Konkurrenz (Simmel) and the theme of education (Durkheim) are discussed for their ability to reframe the Greek city as a community of individuals. In particular, they help answer three fundamental questions: how did Greek cities form, how did citizens recognise each other and how did Greek cities perpetuate themselves?
