International audienceSince its foundation, the International Sociological Association (ISA) has taken on the mission of fostering the academic institutionalization of sociology by identifying interlocutors in national fields and mandating them to represent their countries within the association. It developed a disciplinary model that aimed to unify sociology around norms and practices, many of which originated in the United States. Three phases in its history can be distinguished. From 1949 to 1970, the ISA was made up of representatives of national associations and was still dependent on UNESCO, under whose auspices it was founded.
