International audienceThe excavations at Escalles in the Pas-de-Calais department have uncovered a causewayed enclosure dating around 4000 cal. BCE. The enclosure is located on the Mont d'Hubert, less than 1 km inland from Cap Blanc-Nez. The ditch fill contained a large amount of ceramic, lithic and faunal material associated with numerous human remains in a probably detrital context. Examination of these bones revealed particular stigmata of which there is no doubt as to their anthropic origin: traces of cutting, fracturing on fresh bone and exposure to fire. At the end of the spatial, biological and taphonomic analyses, two hypotheses are discussed as to the conditions that prevailed in the constitution and deposition of this assemblage: ...
