Patients' Awareness of Symptoms, Understanding and Perception of Parkinson's Disease

The ability of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients to recognize symptoms and possess understanding about their condition is a crucial factor in achieving favorable treatment outcomes. This study aims to assess the level of symptom recognition, understanding and perception of PD among patients in one of the teaching hospitals in Klang Valley. A survey was conducted using the Knowledge and Perception of Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (KPPDQ) among Parkinson's disease patients attending the Neurology Clinic in one of the teaching hospitals in Klang Valley. A total of 169 participants completed the KPPDQ. Within different age groups, individuals aged 30-39 and 40-49 had a lower percentage of participants with a high level of understanding, while those aged over 70 exhibited a higher percentage with elevated understanding levels. The correlation between age groups and understanding levels was statistically significant. Participants diagnosed with PD for longer durations (6–10 years and >11 years) showed a higher percentage of elevated understanding levels compared to those diagnosed within the past five years (1–5 years). The link between years since diagnosis and understanding levels was statistically significant. Ethnicity was also significantly associated with understanding levels, with participants of Chinese ethnicity demonstrating a greater proportion of high understanding levels compared to Malay and Indian participants. Employment status showed a noteworthy association with understanding levels, as retired participants had a higher proportion of elevated understanding levels compared to those employed full-time. Participants using the internet as an information source displayed a higher proportion of heightened understanding levels than those who did not. Additionally, participants who had experienced a Parkinson's disease event demonstrated a higher proportion of elevated understanding levels compared to those without such an experience. This study underscores the ongoing need to enhance patient education and understanding regarding Parkinson's disease. Addressing understanding gaps, correcting misconceptions of patient perception, and promoting accurate information are essential tasks for healthcare professionals and support organizations. Through targeted interventions and continuous research, efforts can be made to create a more informed and supportive society for both PD patients and their families, ultimately leading to improved overall well-being.   Keywords: Parkinson's disease, understanding, perceptio
