The article discusses the stages of sports selection and primary orientation in the process of long-term training in rowing. The selection criteria at each stage are disclosed. The negative aspects that hinder the effective selection of the Olympic reserve in the school, the formation of sports improvement groups and the national team of the Rostov region in rowing are analyzed.
