The impact of whiting events on global inorganic carbon cycle and climate change is debatable at the current ocean pH. This work engineered whiting events in a high pH, high alkalinity microalgal culture for carbon dioxide capture and storage. When growing the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica IMET1 in photobioreactors, culture alkalinity more than doubled, increasing from 72.5 mg L-1 to a maximum level of 159.6 mg L-1. At the same time, culture pH increased from 7.9 to 10.1 with concomitant calcium carbonate production. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the precipitated calcium carbonate was primarily monohydrocalcite.
