Opportunities in the training and professional development of instrumental teachers in Ireland

The role of an instrumental teacher is integral in the development of aspiring musicians, but one which is under-researched in Ireland due to the lack of a central governing body. Little is known about the level of support provided to them in the way of training and professional development. This study aimed to investigate the availability of courses in Ireland which offer pedagogical training and how pedagogy is prioritised within these courses. Following desk-based research to determine the above, a survey was carried out on twenty-one instrumental teachers in Munster to discover to what extent they were aware of these courses and what challenges they face in their role. Results showed that, despite their varying levels of experience, participants expressed a need and willingness to partake in additional training. Recommendations are proposed to the teacher, the music schools and policy makers in the conclusion of the study.N
