Photographier l’après-guerre. La reconstruction du champ photographique en Allemagne de l’Ouest entre 1945 et le début des années 1960

The rebuilt of photography in Western Germany between 1945 and the beginning of the sixties echoes the country’s turmoils after the nazi trauma. In 1945, photography has to start from scratch again : all official structures – from industry to amateur circles- have been systematically wiped out by the allies. In an attempt to resist such a seizure, the German seek to redefine their photo practices rebuilding photography around new events – fairs, exhibitions, contests – and structures – periodicals, photo societies, teaching institu- tions – that interconnect different actors : industry and business men, photo professionals and amateur photographers. Thanks to that new organization, a new independent and uni- fied field of photography comes to light. Photography is not anymore considered neither as the propaganda language it used to be in the thirties and forties nor as a medium under the influence of the fine arts. It is for its intrinsic qualities and specificities that photography is therefore put forward. Clearly positioned at the intersection of three of the major trends of young western Germany – importance of leading industries, rise of a leisure society, and the emphasis put on culture – photography soon becomes the language of Western Germa- ny in the fifties, thus enabling the country to regains its position on the photographic in- ternational scene. Attempting to give the most complete view of that phenomenon and mo- vement, this essay not only focuses on the images, ideas, theories – fotoform, Subjektive Fotografie, Totale Photographie – and artistic achievements of professional photographers including notably Steinert and Chargesheimer, but also studies sociological, political and economical issues connected to that evolution, from the rebirth of the Agfa industry group to the launching of the photokina fair.La reconstruction du champ photographique en Allemagne de l’Ouest entre 1945 et le début des années soixante témoigne des bouleversements qui ont affecté le pays après le traumatisme nazi. En 1945, la photographie a ses fondements détruits. Les structures étatiques – de la production industrielle aux groupes amateurs – sont anéanties par les troupes d’occupation alliées. Dans un élan de résistance à la mainmise étrangère, les Allemands redéfinissent les contours de la pratique photographique. Celle-ci se construit autour d’évènements – foires, expositions, prix – et d’organismes – magazines, sociétés, écoles – qui agglomèrent les différents acteurs : industriels, professionnels, et amateurs. Grâce à ces organes de référence communs, c’est un véritable champ uni et autonome qui émerge. La photographie n’est plus considérée ni selon l’utilisation propagandiste des années trente-quarante, ni selon la dépendance qu’elle pourrait nourrir vis-à-vis des beaux-arts. Car c’est bien sur les spécificités du médium que se construit le développement du champ photographique dans ces années-là. Se situant à la jonction des trois pôles qui parcourent la société de la jeune République fédérale d’Allemagne – industrie de pointe, loisirs et culture –, la photographie devient le miroir à petit échelle de ces « longues années cinquante ». Par ce choix, l’Allemagne retrouve son rôle-phare sur la scène photographique internationale. Afin d’en donner la vision la plus complète, la présente étude s’est attachée aux théories – fotoform, la Subjektive Fotografie, la Totale Fotografie – et développements esthétiques des photographes professionnels – Otto Steinert et Chargesheimer en tête –, mais aussi aux enjeux sociologiques, économique et politique entourant ce projet, autour notamment de l’entreprise Agfa et de la foire photographique photokina
