Immanuel Kant’s ethical theory is often considered the most important modern rival to utilitarianism. Both theories are products of the same era in that their foundations were laid during the final decades of the eighteenth century. Jeremy Bentham completed his manuscript of An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation in 1780. It was published in 1789, shortly after Kant’s foundational ethical works, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, which appeared in print in 1785, and the Critique of Practical Reason of 1788.
