Postsynaptic responses of 105 neurons in brain slices were intracellularly recorded from the isthmo-optic nucleus (ION) in pigeons, and 18 of these neurons were labeled with Lucifer yellow. Excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) or spikes were produced in 93 cells, inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in 10 cells, and EPSPs followed by IPSPs in two cells following electrical stimulation of the tecto-isthmooptic tract. The EPSPs occurred in an all-or-none fashion, with short latencies (1.3 +/- 0.6 ms). Repetitive stimulation increased their amplitude and duration, demonstrating that temporal summation was involved.
