The prospect of using insect protein as an alternative feed ingredient

This article aims at the presentation of new approach to the growing need for establishing strategies of feeding farm animals in coming decades. According to FAO forecasts, in 2050 the global population will reach 9 billion people. Already now, the food production is under enormous pressure and struggling with many problems. It is therefore, an urgent need to develop and introduce sustainable production of high-quality protein foods. Poland is a country where there is a limited range of high-protein feed sources, which constitute valuable components for the feed and food production. In the future, insects may become the only effective solution for feeding a constantly growing population. Protein of insect origin, can already be used to produce fish feed in the EU. Current research will be the basis for decisions about the safe introduction of insect protein into the feeding system of farm animals. An example of such research can be GOSPOSTRATEG, the project financed by the National Center for Research and Development, entitled “Developing a strategy for using alternative sources of insect protein in animal nutrition to spread its production on the territory of the Republic of Poland”.
