The purpose of this study was to explore the difficulties that students encountered within a 3rd year Heat Transfer unit delivered to engineering students at the University of Bristol, and to propose a useful teaching intervention to improve student learning. Typically, heat transfer is a difficult topic, with extensive literature confirming common misconceptions at undergraduate level (Thomaz et al., 1995; Reiner et al., 2000; Jasien and Oberem, 2002; Miller et al., 2006; Prince et al., 2012; Yang et al., 2020).
