Smeđe alge (Phaeophyta) su višestanični eukariotski organizmi široko rasprostranjeni u umjerenim i hladnim morima. Do danas je identificirano 1836 vrsta u prosječno 285 rodova. Većina ih obitava u morskom okolišu u kojem imaju važnu ulogu, dok ih manje od 1% obitava u slatkovodnim staništima. Nedavna istraživanja pokazala su kako su smeđe alge bogati izvori bioaktivnih spojeva s izvrsnom prehrambenom vrijednošću te se smatraju funkcionalnom hranom koja djeluje blagotvorno na zdravlje ljudi.
